What does a private chef
cost in Houston?

Almost nobody in this city publishes a number. Chef Fassi's start at $200 a guest. Below are the starting prices, what moves a quote above them, and how to tell a serious quote from a vague one.

Starting prices

What an evening costs

  • Plated dinner, four coursesfrom $225 per guest
  • Plated dinner, three coursesfrom $200 per guest
  • Catering and buffet servicefrom $175 per guest
  • Catering, fifty guests or morefrom $125 per guest

Servers and kitchen staff are included when your event needs them — not added as a line at the end. There is no minimum guest count. Ingredients are what move a quote beyond these figures: wagyu, whole turbot, truffle and caviar more than anything else.

It is quoted per event, not per hour

Almost no private chef in Houston charges hourly, because the hours are not the product. A single dinner involves menu design, sourcing across several suppliers, prep, travel, cooking, plated service and cleanup — and the client only sees the last three. An hourly number would either overcharge for a simple menu or quietly underwrite an expensive one.

What you should receive instead is a written per-event or per-person price, fixed before you commit, with what is covered spelled out. If a quote arrives as one number with no breakdown, ask for the breakdown. The answer tells you a lot.

The four things that move the number

  • Guest count. Per-person cost drops as the count rises, because the prep and the setup are much the same either way. Catering for fifty or more is priced from $125 a guest rather than $175.
  • Ingredients. The widest variable by far. Wagyu, whole turbot, truffle and caviar can double a food cost on their own.
  • Course count and service style. Seven plated courses need more hands than three family-style platters.
  • Venue and distance. A full kitchen costs nothing extra. A venue with no kitchen means mobile equipment, and The Woodlands is not River Oaks.

How it compares to going out

Compare it honestly and the gap is smaller than people assume. A tasting menu for six at a serious Houston restaurant, with wine, service and valet, lands at a real number. Move that evening home and you remove the wine markup entirely, remove the service charge, remove the table-turn clock, and add a chef who cooks only for your table.

Most chefs charge their worst per-person rate at the smallest tables, because the sourcing and prep are nearly identical whether the table seats two or twelve. Chef Fassi does not price that way. The per-guest figure is the same at a table for two as at a table for twelve, and there is no minimum to clear before he will cook.

Where people overspend

Three places, consistently. Booking rentals through a caterer when the venue already has what is needed. Adding a course that nobody has room for by the time it arrives. And paying premium ingredient cost for a dish where the technique, not the protein, is doing the work — a properly made sauce on an ordinary cut beats a wagyu strip cooked indifferently every time.

A chef who is on your side will tell you to cut all three. Ask him to.

FAQ

Private chef pricing — straight answers

What is the average cost of a private chef in Houston?

Most chefs in this city will not publish a number. Chef Fassi's start at $200 a guest for a three-course plated dinner and $225 for four courses; catering and buffet service starts at $175 a guest, and $125 at fifty guests or more. Servers and kitchen staff are included where the event needs them. Ingredients are the main thing that takes a quote above those figures, and every event is quoted in writing at a fixed price before you commit.

Is a private chef more expensive than a restaurant?

Per person, often less than you expect, because there is no markup on wine, no two-hour table limit and no service charge on top of a bill you did not see coming. And unlike most private chefs, the per-guest price does not climb at a small table — a dinner for two is quoted at the same rate as a dinner for twelve.

What drives the price up or down?

Ingredient tier above all — wagyu and Gulf seafood move a quote more than anything else. Then the number of courses, the guest count, and whether rentals are involved. Servers and kitchen staff are included when the event needs them, so staffing is not a separate charge.

Do you charge a deposit?

A deposit secures the date and is credited against the final total. The balance is due around the event. Everything is stated on the proposal in advance.

Is gratuity expected?

It is never required and never added automatically. Clients who want to tip usually do; nobody is made to feel they should.

How does weekly meal preparation get priced?

By the week, based on number of meals, servings and complexity, which usually works out well below per-event pricing because the shopping and prep are consolidated.

“Everything felt thoughtful, personal, and beautifully executed. The food was outstanding, and our guests are still talking about the evening.”
